The city of Lake Oswego will immerse itself in Spanish culture during the month of February. That is when the Lake Oswego Public Library’s Lake Oswego Reads program will get into full swing.

In an attempt to celebrate the power of reading, staffers at the library and other institutions around town are hoping that Lake Oswego residents will pick up Carlos Ruiz Zafon’s acclaimed novel “The Shadow of the Wind” and read it together as a city.

Then, throughout February, dozens of events will be held throughout the city to promote discussion of the issues brought up in the book and to give residents a taste of the atmosphere that is portrayed in the novel.

“It’s very exciting. We wanted this to be something that the entire city of Lake Oswego could get involved in and it’s happening,” said Cyndie Glazer of the Lake Oswego Public Library.

This is the first time that Lake Oswego has ever implemented an event like this. Everything begins on Jan. 9 when complimentary copies of “The Shadow of the Wind” will be handed out at the library from 6:30 to 9 p.m. During this time, Mariano Deobegoso and son will perform Spanish music and food from Spain will be available. All one needs to receive a copy of the book is a library card.

Graham’s Stationery will also be selling copies of the book at a discounted price.

In February, events linked to the book will take place virtually every night.

On Thursdays, book discussions will be held at area Starbucks Coffee shops and on Saturdays, Graham’s Stationery will host Sangria Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m. while local markets, including Wizer’s, Wild Oats and Palisades will host a Taste of Spain in the afternoons.
