William Samuel Cobb
William “Bill” Samuel Cobb died in his home in Lake Oswego on Jan. 20, 2010. He was 84.
He was born in Grants Pass on June 1, 1925 to Everett and Grace Cobb.
He grew up in the Mt. Tabor district of Portland and graduated from Washington High School in 1943.
He began college at Oregon State University, but was drafted into the U.S. Army in September of 1943. His skills on the firing range led him to become a designated marksman. In 1944, he was sent to England as part of a D-Day replacement unit. Then as part of the 29th Infantry Division he was sent to Normandy, was in the battle for St. Lo and was severely injured by German artillery fire near Vire, France.
After recovering in Wales, Mr. Cobb returned to the U.S. and attended officer candidate school at Amherst College. He trained soldiers until he was discharged in l946.
He then returned to Oregon and earned his degree in accounting at the University of Oregon in 1948. It was at the UO that he met Barbara Johns, and the two were married in Portland on Oct. 9, 1948.
Mr. Cobb went to work as an accountant with Deloitte & Touche, and spent his entire career with the firm.
In 1960, the Cobb family moved to Medford and Mr. Cobb became a partner at Deloitte & Touche in l965.
When the Cobbs were transferred back to Portland in l968, the family moved to Lake Oswego. In 1972, they were transferred to Allentown, Pa., and then to Philadelphia. After Mr. Cobb retired in 1984, they returned home to Oregon and settled in Lake Oswego where they lived their remaining years.
Mr. Cobb was a devoted UO fan, and supported the Lundquist College of Business and the university’s athletic teams. He served as an elder in the Westminster Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Kiwanis Club.
Per Mr. Cobb’s request, there will be no memorial service.
His wife, Barbara, died in 2005, and he was buried alongside her at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
Mr. Cobb is survived by his sons William Cobb, Jr. of Palm Desert, Calif., Charles Cobb of Lake Oswego, John Cobb of Menlo Park, Calif.; his daughter Marian McAndie of Portland; his grandchildren Michael Cobb, Mathew Cobb, Jamison McAndie, Morgan McAndie, Bryant Cobb and Lauren Cobb and his great-granddaughter Madison Cobb.
Glenn Maurice Shearer died of pneumonia on Jan. 29, 2010. He was 85.
He was born on Feb. 23, 1924 in Portland to Charles and Merle Shearer. He was raised in the Garden Home area of Portland and attended Multnomah Elementary School and Lincoln High School.
Mr. Shearer served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. During World War II he sailed aboard the USS Crescent City in the Pacific and was involved in landings at Guadalcanal, Funafuti, Bougainville, Guam, Paleilu, Leyte and Okinawa.
After the war, Mr. Shearer returned to Portland and enrolled in Lewis & Clark College where he met Frances Caroline Williams. The two were married Dec. 27, 1946.
Mr. Shearer began his railroad career with Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad. By 1955, his family included his four children, Jennifer, Douglas, Jeffrey and Paul and they lived in Marlene Village near Beaverton.
When the railroad merged into the Burlington Northern, the Shearer family moved to Spokane in 1960.
In 1973, Mr. Shearer took early retirement. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and the family moved back to Portland in 1974.
His wife Frances, of 38 years, died in 1984, but Mr. Shearer continued to be independent and drove a van equipped with a wheelchair lift for many years.
