Jayaram named
a Philly Fellow
Lake Oswego resident Prarthana Jayaram has been selected for a one-year fellowship with Philly Fellows, an organization funded by the AmeriCorps VISTA program.
Jayaram is the daughter of Ashok and Navnit Kaur Jayaram. She graduated from Lake Oswego High School and is a recent graduate of Haverford College.
Jayaram will be a fellow at the Philadelphia Education Fund. Philadelphia Education Fund’s goal is to improve the quality of Philadelphia’s public education system, especially for underserved youth. She will be working as a research and communications fellow, assisting in data collection and the development of different methods to communicate the organization’s work. When she is not working at the Education Fund, she will be participating in leadership training.
The television shows, “Fusion” and “Garden Time” will air Saturday at 8 and 8:30 a.m. on KOIN local 6 in Portland. Lake Oswego resident Jeff Gustin produces the shows.
“Fusion” will feature how to make an Apple Pear Salad with grilled chicken, information on a glass doggy door for pets and varieties of garden flowers to make bouquets.
Tune into “Garden Time” to learn what June Drop is and why it can affect your fruit production, how to plant and care for bonsai plants and how you can easily set up and run a drip irrigation system.
In 2012, the Royal Rosarians will be celebrating their centennial.
For 100 years, by Mayoral proclamation, the Royal Rosarians have been the official greeters and the ambassadors of good will for the city of Portland.
As the Rosarians approach their Centennial in 2012, they are planning a celebration for the organization and the city. To accomplish that, the Rosarians need the help of the citizens in the metro area. Rosarians are inviting the descendants of past members to have a part in their celebration.
“We are looking for descendants of all Royal Rosarians, but especially the first Royal Rosarians in 1912, our Founding Fathers,” said Rosarian Gayle Whitehurst, a former Lake Oswego resident now living in West Linn.
“We would like to connect with them for several reasons. We would like to hear their stories and see what memorabilia or family photographs they may have from years gone by they would be willing to share with us or allow us to copy.
“If there are others who may not be descendants but have old photos and memorabilia we would like to hear from you, also.”
For the photos the Rosarians would like to have the following information if it is known:
n Who the photograph belongs to and contact information;
n Who is in the photo, if known;
n The year it was taken, if known;
n The event where it was taken.
“Even if you do not know all of the information, send the photo anyway, maybe we can help with the identification,” Whitehurst said.
If you have old photos, memorabilia to share or would like more information, contact the Royal Rosarians Centennial Committee at Royalrosariancentennial@royal
rosarians.org. or vist the website at http://www.royalrosarians.org/.
Marylhurst University is the recipient of a $7,500 grant from the Sande Emmy Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation to support Creative Arts Therapies for Kids, or CATS 4 Kids, a mission-driven program providing Marylhurst’s music therapy students with an opportunity to work with special needs children.
The capstone of CATs 4 Kids is the creative arts day camp, a two-week program designed for children with special needs such as learning disabilities and autistic spectrum. These children participate in art, music, movement and drama experiences that reinforce the ideal of achieving one’s maximum potential.
A team of students and instructors from Marylhurst’s music therapy program provides a range of learning opportunities that foster growth in essential areas. The program promotes communicative, behavioral, academic, motor, social and emotional development.
