WEST LINN – For two and a half quarters, top-ranked Lake Oswego appeared to be ripe for an upset at the hands of a pesky West Linn team. Then, the Lakers unleashed star running back Zach Young and the game went from a virtual toss-up to an impressive 29-12 victory for Lake Oswego Thursday night.
Young had a modest 54 yards rushing in the first half as Lake Oswego was fortunate to post a 7-6 halftime lead. But in the second half, Young broke loose for 217 yards and three touchdowns. Many of those runs came on nifty cutback moves.
“He’s the kind of kid you can’t let get to the second level (of the defense),” West Linn coach Ron Chappell said. “In the open field he’s just unstoppable.”
The win gave Lake Oswego sole possession of first place in the Three Rivers League with a 4-0 mark. West Linn dropped to second place after suffering its first league loss.
The first half was a defensive struggle as West Linn managed to keep Lake Oswego’s high potent offense in check. The Lakers' lone first-half score came early in the second quarter, when Jack Lomax connected with backup running back Will Storey for a 14-yard touchdown pass. West Linn, meanwhile, was limited to two Robert Truax field goals in the first half, making the score 7-6 at intermission.
West Linn took the second half kickoff and went on an 11-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by Kyle Kraus’ four-yard touchdown run. That gave West Linn its last lead of the game at 12-7.
That advantage didn’t last long, however, as Lake Oswego needed just five plays to regain the lead. Young got the touchdown on a 47-yard run that was highlighted by a sharp cutback along the right sideline that allowed him to break loose from a pack of defenders. After Lomax’s two-point conversion pass to Storey, the Lakers were in front 15-12.
